"Pain for the proper purpose is productive." - James A. Smith

Radio: Self-image & Gaining from Pain
The quote above is one of my favorite these days. I say it several
times per week either in speaking, radio, or coaching. Last week I
had to remind myself of this very truth (more on that in this
week's blog section).

Other things being equal, I believe
pain is the separator between rich and poor,
failing and succeeding, or whining and winning. You see, most of us can excel
in life when things are going well. When the family's getting along, the kids are
doing good in school, or there's plenty of money in the bank. However, when
pain or struggles enter the picture the winners will rise to the top!

Winners usually do not run from pain, they go through it - provided it's for the
proper purpose. What does
proper purpose mean? It means there should be
something on the other side of the pain that's worthy of us going through it.
The general rule of thumb is; will it take you closer to your goals? Hopefully
you have a system (see last week's newsletter) that has helped you qualify
your goals. If so, you must go through the pain rather than try to avoid it!

Going through pain with a proper purpose is not the challenge. Mom's have
proven this with childbirth. The athletes in the Olympics will prove this for the
next two weeks. Jesus proved this on the cross. Many of you prove it as you
provide for your family. It's the pain
without a purpose that beats us down
and paints constant blotches of misery, depression, and failure within our
self-image portrait. This is the pain we experience from most anger, from
drugs, from a lot of fears, and from selfishness. Guess why we usually
experience this kind of useless pain? Often times it's because we take detours
to avoid the good pain. But, what's on those detours? We quickly learn there's
pain on
all roads of life. This creates more detours and before we know it
we're going in circles with a bunch of
useless pain rather than facing the good
stuff.

Next time you're feeling a little concerned about an obstacle or hurdle ask
yourself "Will this take me closer to being the winner I was born to be?" If it
will, go through it! Then use it tomorrow as an experience and story to lift
somebody else up. You will gain a large return on your investment. You may
avoid useless pain. It will give you confidence. It will help you achieve more. It
will move you closer to a victor rather than a victim. You will be a
giver by
sharing your experiences with others who need to hear it for their own
challenges. And all of these things will increase your self-image.

We discussed the importance of gaining from pain and how it affects our
self-image on
last week's show "Winning With a Healthy Self-image."

Inspiration: Video -  The Underdog who Faced the Pain
This is a perfect example of a humble young man, Paul Potts,
who admittedly had challenges with confidence, yet he faced
the pain. It's 10 minutes long. Once you hit play you can hit
play again to pause the player while the video loads. I think
you'll be glad you viewed it.

Humor: Video - Are Cheetah's Really That Fast?
Persistence pays off. It's not how you start, it's how you
finish. This guys proves it in a hilarious way! (18 sec.)

Blog: My TV Interview, How I Gained From Recent Pain
I was interviewed about my new book on a national
Christian TV show last week, It's Time for Herman and
Sharron. It will air next Monday (8/18/08) on CTN at
10am and 5pm. It will also be available on our website, but
only after I decided to practice what I preach.

In my opinion, the interview went fantastic. They gave me a DVD of the
show and as you might expect, I was eager to get home and view it to see
how we did.

I assume you've experienced "sticker shock" before? It's when you are
totally surprised by what you expect vs. reality. For instance, when you
shop for a car and you think it will be $22,000 but it's really $37,000.

When I got home and viewed the show I experienced sticker shock BIG
time. I've been saying for two years that I need to burn some extra pounds.
And I have, but not as much as I've gained! Can anybody relate? When I
say sticker shock BIG time(no pun intended), I mean it! I was so surprised
at how big I looked. Yeah, I know, TV cameras add 10 pounds. They must
have had some extra duty cameras! I realize to some folks I don't look big
at all, and to others they say the back of my neck looks like a pack of hot
dogs.       I was recently offered a part time job selling...shade!

On the serious side, I was extremely disappointed in myself. I felt
embarrassed and ashamed. Not because of how I looked, because of how I
looked in comparison to how I am capable of looking. It hit me so hard that
I initially wasn't going to post it on our website.

Certainly it will have a greater effect on me than anyone else. But here's the
positive side to all of this. It was the best motivation for my current
situation. Additionally, I will face it and grow from it (not literally, I hope :) I
will also use my storm for today as a story for tomorrow in order to
encourage someone else.

Here's the most important point I would like to make. I eat, live, breathe,
sing, write, coach, and talk personal growth & development. Yet, in the heat
of the moment(viewing the DVD), my emotions were overcome by fear
(embarrassment, shame, guilt, feelings of failing, etc.) Fortunately it was
only temporary but I am so glad that I constantly do things to overcome fear
and pain when I'm not experiencing the fear or pain. Then when I am facing
fears (which is not the time to start preparing), I will be more apt to handle
it rather than run from it.

What have you had to face that you initially wanted to run from? How did it
work out for you? What are you doing today (when you don't need it) to
prepare your emotions for fear and pain down the road?

Knock'em alive!

James
