I hope you had the opportunity to spend some time with your mother this past weekend. This Sunday's radio broadcast was a special tribute to mothers. Many of you called in and left a personal message to your mom on the air. I've already heard some encouraging responses. You may listen to the broadcast here.
The two weekly broadcasts are covering positive ways to deal with current issues, such as gas prices, recession concerns, and the Iraq War. You may catch them on the radio or online.

Car racing schools offer vehicle spin recovery courses. They put you and an instructor in a vehicle with four bald tires. You go out to a fairly large, wet parking lot that has an orange traffic cone in the middle. The instructor tells you to drive directly towards the cone and make a sharp turn so the vehicle will start spinning. Then you’re told to recover from the spin and don’t hit the cone. It seems pretty easy considering all the space in the large parking lot and only one small cone. So the driver steers toward the orange cone, turns the wheels as far as it will go, hits the brakes, and the vehicle starts spinning. The orange cone can actually be seen through the windshield flying from side to side and as the driver recovers, he or she hits the cone. The drivers try again knowing for certain they will succeed the next time, considering the large parking lot and such a small cone, but they hit it again!
The instructor asks the frustrated driver to try it again. The Skip Barber Racing School says the average driver hits the cone six times. Finally, the instructor will tell the driver they’re hitting the cone because they’re looking at the cone. Uhhmm, excuse me? Then the instructor will continue by saying that in order to avoid hitting the cone the driver must look elsewhere. The driver is told to look where they want the vehicle to go. Inevitably, the driver will still hit the cone the next few runs because it’s actually hard to not look at the cone. As the driver trains their eyes to look where they want to go rather than where they don’t want to go, they end up where they want to be.
“In the long run, men hit only what they aim at. Therefore they had better aim at something high.” -Henry David Thoreau
It’s easy to keep our eyes on the orange cones of life - the things we do not want to hit. Things like failures, regrets, fears, worries, hurts, habits, anger, frustrations, and guilt. We get it from all angles - the news, movies, sitcoms, documentaries. Negativity is all around. It takes effort, discipline, commitment, and hard work to keep your eyes where you want to go.
The above is an excerpt from James' new book I Was Born to Win: How to Think It, Say It, Believe It, & Live It.

Brian invited his mother over for dinner. During the course of the meal, Brian's mother couldn't help but notice how beautiful Brian's roommate, Jennifer, was. Brian's Mom had long been suspicious of a relationship between Brian and Jennifer, and this had only made her more curious. Over the course of the evening, while watching the two interact, she started to wonder if there was more between Brian and Jennifer than met the eye.
Reading his mom's thoughts, Brian volunteered, 'I know what you must be thinking, but I assure you Jennifer and I are just roommates.'
About a week later, Jennifer came to Brian saying, 'Ever since your mother came to dinner, I've been unable to find the beautiful silver tea holder. You don't suppose she took it, do you?' Brian said, 'Well, I doubt it, but I'll send her an e-mail just to be sure. So he sat down and wrote: __________________________________________________________ Dear Mom, I'm not saying that you 'did' take the silver tea holder from the house, I'm not saying that you 'did not' take it. But the fact remains that one has been missing ever since you were here for dinner. Love, Brian
Several days later, Brian received an email back from his mother that read: ________________________________________________________
Dear Son, I'm not saying that you 'do' sleep with Jennifer, I'm not saying that you 'do not' sleep with Jennifer. But the fact remains that if Jennifer was sleeping in her own bed, she would have found the silver tea holder by now.
Love, Mom

In the last radio broadcast in April, I discussed the choices we make based on what seems to be right or wrong. We used the controversial movie Gone Baby Gone as the headliner for discussion and concluded with real issues such as gas prices and recession fears.
In the movie, A 4 year-old girl is kidnapped and chief of police (Morgan Freeman) vows to find her. His own child was kidnapped and murdered years ago. A young detective (Casey Affleck, brother of Ben) has also been hired...read more and/or respond here
