Making Difficult Choices

"Make that difficult choice now, it only becomes harder to make later" - James A. Smith.

The only time this seems to apply is....all the time! It is amazing how much easier (even with temptation factored in) it is to avoid the bar vs. leaving the bar. To avoid the argument vs. stopping the argument. To stay out of the hole vs. digging out.

Why do we do this? Often times we even know it's gonna be more difficult to climb back to safety, yet we jump in head first and go straight to the deep end. Then we count on our own self, or better yet, someone else, to bail us out.

There are so many reasons this happens, but today I'll focus on the Good ole' EGO. One definition of EGO is E.G.O - Edging God Out. In other words, "I can handle this, I'm in full control" Ha, sure you are...bull butter!

This is how our ego tricks us all the time. The same ego that can't resist the temptation in the first place is now going to have the ability to bail us out when we're in deeper? (rolls eyes) Think about that for a moment.

This is why I insist on feeding my mind, daily, with the good, the good, the pure, and the positive. All of us need help. The ones who think they don't, need it the most.

Here's a new thought, get help from others - books, audio, support groups, etc. before you need a bail out? At some point you will have to depend on others anyway, why not do it on your terms? It's easier to get help for staying out of jail vs. getting out of jail. And a lot cheaper!

I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Grow get'em!

James

@1st - I'm gonna steal that "I've never regretted not drinking"...good one!

@Becky - unfortunately, that comment comes from my own stubborn experiences :)

Absolutely, it is much easier to stay out of the hole vs. digging out! We jump into the hole for instant gratification...desparation. Often, we feel we deserve to be in a hole anyway. Sometimes we do it because we know someone will bail us out like always. Or perhaps we want that person's attention and asking them to bail us out is the only way to get it.

When trying to avoid tempations such as you mentioned: going to the bar or drinking, I would say to myself: "that drink really would be good, however, it is gone fast. I will probably regret drinking it afterwards, however, no way will I regret not drinking it". I have never been sorry that I did not drink, only sorry that I did.

Yeah, I'm a bull butter,  I am trying to continue to remind myself that even if I do think I am in control, God's control is perfect, mine has failed me many times.

I especially liked the comment:  The same ego that can't resist the temptation in the first place is now going to have the ability to bail us out when we're in deeper?  A great question that, I would guess, 100% of people do not consider.
