Thursday morning, 12.31.09, I am sitting down with Tim Donaghy, the NBA Referee who has just been released from prison for gambling on Basketball games. You may have seen him recently on ESPN, 60 Minutes, or Fox News. My interest in basketball is minimal but my interest in someone, who seemingly had the world by the tail and then lost it all, is huge.
Here's what I understand at the moment. Tim was at the highest level of refereeing for the NBA. He was paid very well, had the big house, toys, fame, power, and a wife with four children. Today, he has a criminal record, no job, no wife, and a torn reputation.
He has written a book about his experiences on and off the court, entitled Personal Foul. I've not read his book yet. I have only seen a few interview clips from 60 Minutes and Fox News.
My goal in this interview is quite simple, to learn;
-
What was inside of Tim (or was not inside) that drove him to feed his gambling addiction to the point of risking and losing it all?
-
What has he learned from it?
Tim has many enemies, after all he was gambling on games that he himself officiated. The story gets deeper because the Mob also got involved and he was allegedly forced to gamble with and for them. To decrease his prison sentence he shared a lot of his information, about the Mob, to the Authorities!
Questions? To one degree or another, most of us have similar challenges, demons, or addictions in our lives. You're welcome to post any questions you may have for Tim.
